The Spring Independent School District’s fifth middle school is named after Stelle Claughton, a longtime educator and administrator with a career spanning forty-two years serving students, parents, community and staff in the public education arena. A graduate of the University of South Arkansas with a Bachelor of Arts degree, she began her teaching career in 1957 in the Houston and Spring Independent School Districts. 

Claughton taught seventh-, eighth- and ninth-grade English in Houston ISD and served as a guidance counselor in HISD and in three elementary schools and one junior high school in Spring ISD. In 1970, she was named principal of Bammel Middle School where she pioneered middleschool instruction in the first open-spaced middle school in the Houston area and one of the few in the nation. She served in this capacity until 1978, when she was appointed principal of Spring High School before being promoted to Director of Curriculum and Instruction Services. For 19 years, from 1981 to 2000, she served in Personnel Services, ending her illustrious career in education as an Assistant Superintendent of Personnel Services, Support Services and Community Relations. Stelle Claughton has devoted her life to public education. Naming Spring ISD’s fifth middle school in her honor is a tribute to her years of dedication and a fitting way for the District to show its gratitude and appreciation for her 30 years of service to its students, staff and community. It is the District’s hope that Stelle Claughton Middle School will long stand as a reminder of her contribution to the community.
